Points of Interest
The waters of the island are a Mediterranean Marine Reserve due to their excellent quality and biodiversity of the flora and fauna.
Tabarca is the only inhabited island of the Valencian Community and is situated opposite the city of Alicante, 11,000 nautical miles away and close to the Santa Pola cape. In actual fact it is more than an island, being a small archipelago composed, apart from Tabarca, by the little islets of La Cantera, La Galera and la Nao. It has a length of 1,800 metres and a máximum width of some 400 metres.
The coastline harboured in the past a refuge for Berber pirates. In the 18th century, Carlos III ordered it to be fortified and a town grew up there in which lodged several fishermen´s familes from Genoa that had been captives in the Tunisian city Tabarka. The city walls around the urban centre have been officially declared of historical, artistic and cultural interest.
A typical visit lasts one day. There are many excursions, with greater or lesser frequency depending on the season, from the port of Alicante with a comfortable
sea crossing lasting approximately one hour. It is also possible to go from Santa Pola, or Benidorm. Once on the island, visitors can enjoy the coves and clear seas from a picturesque marina with excellent dining facilities where one can sample traditional stew, the local dish of the island. A stroll to the town centre and a visit to the island museum is recommended. Visitors may also choose to stay over on the island now due to the opening of a number of guest houses in recent years.
The boat trip to Tabarca Island can be made comfortably from Alicante, Santa Pola, Guardamar & Benidorm. The telephone number for information about the timetable from Alicante is (+34)966 423 066.
